When I moved to Wakefield I was on the hunt for a new barbers. The wrong haircut can dramatically change your image and self confidence so I am particular about who cuts my hair.
Having done the rounds of Wakefield’s finest barbers I wanted to give the lowdown on my favourite barbers in Wakefield and my personal experiences with each and every one of them.
Barber Joes:
Barber Joes was my go to barbers for the first 12 months of living in Wakefield. The owner is a really nice guy and the price is very cheap. The barbers is also close to the Aagrah Indian restaurant who allow all customers to park free of charge.
All positives….so why the change? Joe’s barbers doesn’t take bookings and happens to be ridiculously popular. As someone who is self employed the times I could go have my hair cut were sporadic. I tried a number of different times. Saturday I would bump into the weekend crew, mid morning I would be behind the local pensioners and late afternoon the after school crowd. There were times I would spend 90 minutes waiting for a haircut.
Busy in my work and family life this was too long to wait and unfortunately I’ve had to move onto another barbers.
My experience at Joe’s was great and the owner did suggest on numerous occasions he may hire support staff however I have since moved onto a barber’s which works with my scheduling. If price point and convenience are your main drivers then Joe’s is perfect.

Urban Quarter:
Urban quarter has a really cool vibe and a young audience; a great decor and style with attitude. One downside for me was living outside the city centre meant I had to drive into Wakefield and pay for parking on top of the cost of my hair cut.
Urban quarter runs on an appointment basis. Unfortunately the previous appointment ran over by 15-20 minutes so I was late in the chair. These things happen as businesses don’t always run like clockwork. While waiting I would have liked to have been offered a drink or something to pass the time.
Hair cut wise they were spot on and listened to my instructions and did a great job. Price wise Urban quarter is not the cheapest and although the haircut was good the overall experience did not warrant the additional cost of the hair cut and parking. Reading reviews online they seem to maintain a great reputation which is fantastic. Personally speaking my experience was just ok.
If you are city centre based and want to have your hair cut in a cool atmosphere then this is a really good option.

Black Dog Barbershop:
Black Dog Barbershop is actually on the outskirts of Wakefield in the Newton Hill area. I didn’t have a hair cut here but actually had an old fashioned shave which was bought for me by my wife.
The barbers has a really cool vibe. Playstation to play on for those waiting, good music and an old school arcade. The decor is graffiti and chipboard style and perfectly suits the image of the barbers.
Again here I had to wait 15-20 minutes after my appointment time but I didn’t mind as the staff kept me in the loop and the atmosphere was good. The old school shave was immense and the whole procedure was top drawer. The staff all seemed to have a good rapport with the customer base and my experience here was actually very good.
Unfortunately it’s the other side of Wakefield for me so I wouldn’t consider it on a regular basis however those in the area should seriously give it a chance.

Philips Hair Salon (Sandal):
Not strictly a male barbers however it’s unisex so it gets a pass. I decided to give Philips Hair Salon a whirl as it’s a two minute walk from my house and they work on an appointment basis. This meant the whole hair cutting experience could be dealt with within 30 minutes.
Philips is a conventional hairdressers but if you live to the Sandal side of Wakefield it can be a really good choice. Each customer is offered a drink upon arrival which is a nice touch you don’t often get at male barbers. Secondly my appointments have all been on time. This is a real plus for me as it allows me to schedule my time accordingly.
Philips’ haircut prices vary hugely dependent upon the experience level of the hairdresser. If it’s one of the most senior stylists then you can expect to pay £25 however for trainee stylists you can pay anywhere between £5-10. This can come as a real bargain as all trainee stylists have their customers checked by an experienced stylist so you always end up with a haircut you are happy with.
From a personal experience perspective Philips has been the standout based upon location, general customer service and price point (if using junior stylists).
